When I talk about my #WeSowWeGrow gardening philosophy, it really comes down to a few core ideas that guide everything I do and teach:

  • Learn as you grow: I’m not a Master Gardener (yet!), but I share what I’m learning in real time—my mistakes are meant to save you a few of your own.
  • Community over perfection: From our Facebook group to our nonprofit We Sow We Grow Project, it’s a safe space. No arguing about GMOs vs organic, no shaming, just curiosity and support.
  • Food as empowerment: I believe in food education, food sovereignty, and food love—especially in my own South Side of Chicago community. Growing your own tomatoes, corn, or watermelon is about taste, but it’s also about power.
  • Start where you are: Balcony, backyard, or community garden, you can grow something. We celebrate every seed, every harvest, and every zone (yes, I’m jealous of folks growing mangoes in Florida!).

If I pulled all of this into a “definitive guide,” it would be: grow boldly, share freely, and let your garden connect you to other people, not just plants.

What part of that philosophy are you most interested in—community, beginner how‑tos, or food sovereignty?
