My experience with the 3 Dunes Challenge at Indiana Dunes was quite an adventure! The challenge involves a 1.5-mile trail on the park's tallest sand dunes, some of which have a slope of 43°. It's a tough climb, but the views are worth it.

Here are some tips based on my experience:

  1. Try to visit when it's a bit colder. The sand hardens and doesn't sink beneath your feet as much.
  2. Bring a backpack with enough room for clothing items you may remove, as you will get warm climbing the dunes.
  3. Don't forget a water bottle and shoes that easily remove sand.
  4. Take your time and enjoy the journey.

The challenge took us about one and a half hours to complete. We climbed a total of 552 vertical feet across three dunes: Mt. Jackson, Mt. Holden, and Mt. Tom. Each dune offered unique challenges and beautiful views.

After the challenge, you can head to the beach, visit the nature center, or return to the visitor's center to get your 3DC sticker and possibly purchase a hoodie. It's a great way to commemorate your accomplishment!

So, are you ready to take on the 3 Dunes Challenge?
