Teaching contractions to first graders can be a bit challenging, but I've found a few techniques that really help. Here are my top four:

Contractions Songs: I love incorporating catchy songs into our learning. Jack Hartmann's videos are a favorite. They make tricky concepts more accessible and fun!

Hands-On Practice: Activities that allow students to use a manipulative or tool are always a hit. For instance, I use index cards with two words on them. Students cut the letters that are dropped when a contraction is formed and draw an apostrophe in its place!

Repetition: The more our students see something, the more likely they are to remember it. I work contractions into center work, small group, morning work, etc. for a few weeks to help cement the learning.
