Question
How does Molly Lynch’s Math Meeting routine work?
Answer
Math Meeting is a daily routine I've developed to help strengthen students' math skills. It's designed to take less than 10 minutes a day and focuses on building skills every single day of the school year.
The routine covers a variety of concepts, which we discuss from the first day of school to the last. These concepts include writing the date in two forms, filling in a calendar, counting the days, using a tens frame, tally marks, visual patterns, number patterns, place value, money, 1 more/1 less, 10 more/10 less, comparing numbers, balancing equations, and telling time.
The beauty of Math Meeting is that it gives students exposure to the same concept every single day until they've mastered it. Instead of waiting until later in the school year to introduce concepts like place value or money, we introduce them right away and build on them day by day.
While the routine is designed with first-grade standards in mind, it can also work for kindergarten or second-grade students. I've been using it for a few years now and can honestly say that my students have a much better understanding of these concepts as a result.
