Question
What are Carolyn Scott's signature strategies for overcoming public speaking phobia?
Answer
Hi, I’m Carolyn Scott-Hamilton from The Healthy Voyager. Here’s how I approach overcoming public speaking phobia, based on what’s worked for me and for many clients:
-
Over-prepare the content: Know your material inside and out. I rehearse out loud, in front of a mirror, and with a trusted friend, and refine based on feedback. Familiarity calms the nervous system.
-
Practice everyday “mini-speaking”: I build confidence by talking to new people, attending meetups, and putting myself in small, slightly uncomfortable social situations. Regular low-stakes reps make bigger audiences feel less intimidating.
-
Use simple notes, not a script: I rely on bullet points or an outline so I don’t panic if I lose my place, but I’m not trapped reading word-for-word.
-
Plan for interruptions: I intentionally build in pauses for questions, comments, or a breath. Expecting the “unexpected” keeps a sneeze, tech hiccup, or question from derailing me.
Would you like help turning these into a step-by-step practice plan for your next talk?
