Hi, I’m Carolyn Scott-Hamilton from The Healthy Voyager. Food insecurity is a huge global and local issue, but there are very real ways we can all help combat it.

From my perspective, the key is to strengthen food security on multiple levels—availability, access, and smart use of nutritious food—while supporting people’s overall wellness and dignity.

Some of the most impactful strategies I focus on are:

  • Supporting local agriculture and farmers’ markets so communities have fresh, affordable food
  • Creating and backing community gardens and school gardens
  • Reducing food waste at home, in restaurants, and along the supply chain
  • Expanding access to social safety nets and food assistance programs
  • Improving food distribution and storage so surplus food reaches hungry families
  • Teaching nutrition, cooking, and budgeting skills so families can make the most of what they have

When communities rally around these areas—production, distribution, consumption, and storage—we move closer to a world where everyone has enough healthy food.
