Question
Why is storytelling crucial in Brian D Smith's approach to handling sudden loss and grief?
Answer
Storytelling sits at the heart of my approach because grief is experienced through the stories the mind tells after a loss.
When someone dies suddenly, the brain races to make sense: “I should have…,” “If only…,” “My life is over.” Those stories create much of the suffering. By bringing them into the open, we can gently question, reshape, and re-choose them.
Story also gives grief a home. As Rich Curtis and I discussed, grief does not go away; it transforms. When you can tell your story in a safe, compassionate space, the grief that once ambushed you becomes something you can visit, work with, and even draw strength from.
Underneath it all, changing your story from “endings” to “continuing bonds” is how many people move from pure pain toward meaning and growth.
Would you like help reframing a specific part of your own story right now?
