Answer
I talk about this a lot, especially in my chat with Booth Junkie, so here’s my take in a nutshell.
P2P (pay‑to‑play) sites can be especially rough on new voice actors. They tend to:
- Normalize low, non‑industry-standard rates
- Encourage race-to-the-bottom bidding
- Train buyers to expect “cheap and fast” instead of professional value
For beginners, that often means:
- You undercharge because “that’s what everyone’s doing”
- You don’t learn proper rate structures or how to negotiate
- You risk helping drive overall market rates down for everyone
They can be used strategically later in your career, but I generally don’t recommend them as a primary path for newbies who are still learning business, branding, and pricing.
Are you currently on any P2P sites, or just researching whether to join?
