Hi there! I’m Mercedes Jackson. Here’s how I personally recommend doing Machu Picchu based on my own trip and what actually worked for me:

  • Don’t stay in Cusco if your main goal is Machu Picchu. The commute is long and the altitude is more extreme.
  • Stay in Urubamba at Spirit of the River Lodge – it’s about 20 minutes from the Ollantaytambo train station, which is where you’ll catch PeruRail or IncaRail.
  • From Ollantaytambo, the train ride to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) is about 1 hour 30 minutes with amazing views.
  • From Aguas Calientes, take the 30-minute bus up to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
  • Altitude hits everyone differently. I felt fine, but my friend got sick, so move slowly, hydrate, and listen to your body.
  • To make it easy, I recommend booking with @machupicchuvacation so they handle train, bus, entry tickets, and your guide. I literally just had to show up.

If you want my full Lima + Machu Picchu itinerary, I have it available for under $5 with the discount code “BLACK”.

What part of planning Machu Picchu stresses you out the most right now?
