What are Mercedes Jackson’s experiences and recommendations for authentic travel in Africa?

I’ve shared a lot about my time moving around Africa, so here’s a quick breakdown of my experiences and recommendations based on where I’ve actually been.
In South Africa (Johannesburg), I honestly felt it was very colonized and reminded me of Europe more than the “real Africa” vibe I wanted. I still felt safe solo, though. I recommend:
- 26 South Resort for hot air balloon, ATVs, and activities
- Safari and wine tasting
- Besos for ladies night
- Byblos Hubbly Lounge for a fun vibe
In Kenya (Nairobi), I stayed at Four Points at JKIA and loved it. Airport pickup/drop-off, great breakfast, rooftop restaurant and pool, and Ubers were always reasonably priced. I also suggest:
- A safari that’s furthest from the city for a more authentic experience
From my wider Africa travels, I’ve enjoyed:
- Ghana (Detty December) – super lit nightlife, party till sunrise
- Zanzibar – personally one of my least favorites, even though I did the famous Rock Restaurant
- Lusaka, Zambia – Chaminuka Lodge (book ahead)
- Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe – Lookout Cafe for views, food, and onsite activities
- Cape Verde – beautiful beaches, friendly people, very safe, but have a translator app handy
If you want a more “authentic Africa” feel, I’d lean toward Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Cape Verde over Johannesburg’s city side.
