I focus on sharing and celebrating a few key extraction methods rather than doing all of them myself in-house.

  • Steam distillation – the most common method for herbs and many aromatics (like lavender, tea tree, geranium). Steam passes through plant material, lifts the volatile compounds, then condenses so the essential oil can be separated from the water.
  • Expression (cold pressing) – used for citrus peels such as orange, lemon, and grapefruit. The rind is mechanically pressed to release the aromatic oil.
  • Enfleurage – an old French technique I love to talk about, especially for delicate flowers. Petals are placed into fat or vegetable oil, which slowly absorbs their aroma. The saturated “pomade” is then washed with alcohol so the aromatic compounds move into the alcohol; when the alcohol evaporates, you’re left with a highly concentrated absolute from the flowers.

Is there a particular plant or blend you’re curious about so I can walk you through which method suits it best?
