How does the GeoCOMPASS Center incorporate the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers in its environmental conservation efforts?

We weave the Buffalo Soldiers’ legacy into GeoCOMPASS Center work in three main ways:

• Story as foundation: We highlight Buffalo Soldiers as early stewards of US national parks, using their history to show that Black service and environmental leadership are deeply connected, not new or peripheral.
• Action, Resilience & Continuity: Their example shapes our core ethos—responding to climate and ecological stress with disciplined action, community resilience, and long-term continuity in projects and training.
• Education & eXplorers programs: Through GeoCOMPASS eXplorers® and GeCCO-RANGERCOMM, we design learning journeys that echo ranger-style service: safeguarding ecosystems, guiding visitors, and honoring under-told legacies in conservation.
