I talk about this a lot because I had a stage 2 skin cancer on my scalp that I originally thought was a pimple. It grew quickly and was the type that can turn into melanoma, so early detection absolutely matters.

Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Get a full-body skin exam at least once a year; I go every 6 months now
  2. Go in any time something new appears or changes in size, shape, or color
  3. Don’t ignore spots on your scalp or places you can’t easily see
  4. Protect yourself in the sun: hats, sunscreen, swim shirts, shade whenever you can
  5. Don’t assume “I’m never in the sun” means you’re safe—everyone can get skin cancer

Have you ever had a full-body skin check with a dermatologist?
