Hi, I’m Paul Rogers from That Creative CEO. Love this question.
My softbox + DIY grid setup “outperforms” a standard bare softbox or open light because:
- Control – The grid stops light from spilling everywhere, so you’re lighting your subject, not your whole room.
- Contrast – Less spill = deeper shadows, more shape to faces, more cinematic depth.
- Separation – Background doesn’t get washed out, so your subject pops.
- Repeatability – Once it’s controlled, you can recreate the same look in any space.
The DIY part (gaff tape crosshatch) just gives you all that control even if you lost the original grid.
What kind of content are you lighting right now—talking heads, products, or something else?
