Paul’s approach is less “new trick” and more “using the tools on purpose instead of by default.”

Traditional beginner setups often:

  1. Point the key straight at the face
  2. Add a grid to “be cinematic”
  3. Blast the background by accident

Paul’s method:

  1. Feathering the light (aiming it slightly off) gives softer skin, smoother wrap, less nose/forehead hotspot, and cleaner shadows.
  2. Grids are used only when you need control and contrast, not as a permanent cheat code.

So instead of one rigid “look,” you get intentional control: choose softness vs contrast, wrap vs separation, depending on the story and setup.
