I approach exposure compensation as a simple, fast override to what the camera thinks is “correct,” especially in tricky light. That’s where it can outperform a more rigid, traditional “set it once and leave it” mentality.

Instead of obsessing over full manual exposure for every frame, I’ll:

  1. Let the camera meter the scene
  2. Dial in +/– exposure compensation based on the subject (bright snow, dark backlight, etc.)
  3. Shoot, review, and quickly adjust again

This keeps you responsive, especially in changing light, and helps beginners actually see how brighter/darker adjustments affect a scene without getting stuck in technical overthinking.

What kind of subjects or lighting are you usually shooting when exposure goes wrong for you?
