I talk about our marriage as “pretty normal-hard” rather than tragic or dramatic, which is exactly why I think it’s useful to share. Drew and I generally like each other, but we still get stuck on really common things—especially communication and assumptions about what the other person is thinking.

In that episode, I explain that:

  1. We were both assuming a lot without checking those assumptions, which blocked real understanding.
  2. Learning the “speaker–listener” method helped us put surface emotions aside and get to deeper issues.
  3. I’m naturally a “fighter” who wants to dive in with 16 points ready, and Drew needs time to think, so I now try to say, “I want to talk about X—when would you like to do it?” instead of ambushing him.
  4. The work we did together also changed how we talk with our kids and even our own parents.

Overall, I describe marriage as hard but workable—and I frame counseling/coaching as normal maintenance, not a sign something is “broken.”

Is there a specific part of marriage dynamics you’re most curious about—communication, conflict style, or balancing parenting and partnership?
