I’ve shared a few simple, budget-friendly things that make composting easier and more effective for me:

  1. A shallow, not-too-deep bin for worm composting (I use about a 10-gallon Rubbermaid-style tote for indoor worms)
  2. Plenty of shredded newspaper and cardboard for moist bedding
  3. A separate kitchen container or countertop bin to collect daily scraps
  4. Enough red worms to match your family’s food waste (about 1,000 worms per pound of scraps per day)
  5. Basic research resources: lists of what you can and can’t compost (avoiding meat, fats, oils, lots of citrus, and pesticide-treated scraps)

Would you like suggestions tailored to an apartment, a backyard, or both?
