I’m Natasha Nicholes. For urban gardening beginners, I lean into tools and techniques that make small spaces productive and less intimidating.

From my own garden and the We Sow We Grow Community Garden, I recommend:

  1. Seeding Square – a color‑coded seed spacer that gives perfect square‑foot spacing, depth accuracy, and neat grids. It’s great for kids and new gardeners and can double or triple harvests in small beds.
  2. Mason jar gardens – wide‑mouth mason jars, quality potting soil, and a sunny (south or southwest) windowsill for herbs or even a single carrot in a tall jar.
  3. Simple raised beds – even old tires or one small 3×6 bed, plus basic composting (kitchen scraps, cardboard, lawn clippings) for natural fertilizer.

Would you like suggestions tailored to a balcony, patio, or indoor-only space?
