Summary
One big lesson I’ve learned is that small efforts go a very long way with locals. Learning even a handful of phrases in the local language changes everything – it signals respect, breaks the ice, and usually leads to warmer, more authentic interactions.
I’ve also found that choosing locally owned stays, neighbourhood eateries, and small tour operators naturally creates more chances to talk with people, hear their stories, and understand daily life rather than just skimming tourist highlights.
Respect is huge: dressing appropriately, following local customs (especially at sacred sites), asking before taking photos, and remembering you’re a guest in someone’s home all shape how people respond to you.
Finally, slowing down helps. When you’re not rushing through a checklist of sights, you have time for real conversations – that’s where the meaningful connections happen.
Is there a particular destination you have in mind where you’d like to connect more with locals?
