- Language connection – learning basic phrases, sometimes studying at local language schools, and always using please/thank you in the local language
- Locally owned stays – homestays, B&Bs, small guesthouses where you actually talk with your hosts and get their stories and recommendations
- Eating where locals eat – family-run eateries, hawker stalls, menus without English, and home-style food over tourist restaurants
- Respectful engagement – understanding local customs and sacred sites, dressing appropriately, asking before taking photos, and remembering we’re guests
