Summary
I describe Caleta Tortel as one of the most remote villages in southern Chile, tucked away along the Carretera Austral between the Northern and Southern Patagonian Ice Fields, and often underappreciated by overlanders passing through.
For me, it’s a close‑knit coastal community of about 500 people, built on wooden boardwalks and stilt houses, experienced entirely on foot. It was genuinely one of our favourite places in Chilean Patagonia – a small place where great things come in a small package.
Are you thinking of adding Tortel to a Carretera Austral itinerary, or just curious about it?
