I focus on three main areas when I’m helping voice actors tame fricatives:
- Mic technique: Angle the mic slightly off-axis (about 30–45°) and keep enough distance so the airflow from sounds like F, V, S, and Z doesn’t hit the capsule directly. Small angle changes can make a big difference.
- Articulation adjustments: Lighten the pressure of the bottom lip against the teeth on F and V, and soften tongue-to-teeth contact on S and Z. You still want clarity, just less aggressive air friction.
- Performance and editing: Reduce vocal intensity on fricative-heavy words, then use gentle EQ and a de-esser in post, rather than over-processing the whole track.
