Scott here. For family work, I keep things simple, portable, and kid‑friendly.

From the content you saw, here is gear I recommend and actually use:

  1. Camera: A solid mirrorless body like the Nikon Zf (great image quality, compact, fun to shoot)
  2. Carrying system: Spider Holster instead of a neck strap, so your camera is always ready and not swinging around
  3. Bag: Think Tank Backstory 13 for carrying camera, lens, and a bit of backup gear
  4. Lights for portraits (especially with kids):
    1. Aputure MC (small RGB constant light)
    2. Godox SL60W or Ulanzi 40W with softbox or umbrella for soft, flattering light

For family vacations or casual portrait moments, I’ll often go one camera, one lens, and keep the rest minimal.

What kind of family portraits are you planning—studio, outdoor, or travel?
