I focus on a few core principles when someone’s just starting out:
- Treat it like a business, not a hobby – Voiceover is entrepreneurship. You’re the product, the marketer, and the CEO.
- Acting first, “nice voice” second – Take acting and performance training. VO is about choices, not vocal tricks.
- Nail the basics at home – Learn recording, editing, and how sound really works before worrying about fancy gear.
- Specialize, don’t be “any voice for anything” – Find lanes (commercial, narration, imaging, etc.) and build toward those.
- Be patient and persistent – Getting good and getting paid both take time, coaching, and consistent practice.
